And now, four months later, they are on the verge of signing another player who is A) roughly the same age (Abreu is 32, Lee is 30); B) much worse defensively, considering his range and throwing arm; C) an inferior athlete -- Lee's thickening body greatly concerns some general managers; and D) much, much, much more expensive, with the team's financial obligation for an impact corner outfielder increasing by perhaps as much as $85 million, if the Phillies' bid takes them over $100 million. It's very Philly-like to easily look like an idiot for the front offices of our teams, but let's hope they don't take that route.
Happy Thanksgiving and please no family fights over Pat Gillick, Andy Reid, Allen Iverson, or any Philly sports personalities.

It does look pretty bad on the surface, but the thing is, the thing needed to rearranged with a new mix of players. That's nothing negative about Abreu, he was a great player and probably a great guy, but the current mix just wasn't working.
Oh, but I agree, Carlos Lee is a bad idea, but from what I hear, the Phils really do have zero interest in him, its just a rumor.
But it's the definition of the front office flip-flopping on its agenda. Lee is less athletic and lazier than Abreu and he would get signed to a huge contract. Maybe with a new team he could play well, but is that chance worth a huge multi-year contract.
If the Phillies were actually interested in him, then it would be a flip flop. But they aren't [or I guess "weren't" is the operative word now], so it's not a flip flop.
