Penalty Kick Golden Goal

Well, Australia vs. Italy was an amazing match. Australia mostly dominated the match and played a man up for most of the 2nd half, but the Socceroos couldn't pull it off. Francesco Totti scored a 95th minute extra time penalty kick. There was no question the penalty kick had to be called, the Italian player could have jumped over the tackle easily, but he went down to get the PK. The penalty kick was basically a golden goal situation because the extra time was used up, so everyone knew if it went in it was over and that turned out to be true.

This game just shows how difficult soccer is for the lesser known countries. It's true any team can win any single game against any other opponent. But it more often comes out that little underdogs cannot take on the big powerhouse countries in the elimination. It's not like March Madness, unlikely for George Mason to advance that far in this tournament. Not to say that Australia didn't have a chance to win this game, they had many oppurtunities, but there were a lot of factors playing against them, mainly the name of the country they were playing. So have fun watching the Ghana vs. Brazil match tomorrow, but don't bet your house on Ghana.
Go Ghana!
